💨 The Myth About Authority

We think we must be in charge if we want to lead.

And we learn, at an early age, that having the steering wheel is the only way to lead. And if that steering wheel is not attached to authority and power, it just doesn’t work.

Most of the time what we actually do is that we confuse having authority with the responsibility of leading.

Perhaps you've experienced some of the same frustrations I've heard people talk about so many times.

I remember how often they commented on feeling like victims, blaming the problems on the organization. Over the years, it was easy for them to fall into the trap of toxic thinking.

'They don't like change, this is how we always do things, there's no progress, and they don't value my ideas' were ones of most common during those times.

💡It is funny how strongly people believe that being in a position of authority is a requirement for leadership. They think they have to wait for their turn to lead until they achieve such a position.

Big NO.

Rather than playing the victim and constantly making excuses, ask yourself if you're more inclined to blame others rather than take on a proactive leadership role.

Here are some essential tips for you to embrace when you are practicing proactive leadership:

🚀Be Proactive:
Take the initiative and anticipate needs rather than reacting after the fact.

🧩Become a Great Problem Solver:
Develop the ability to find effective solutions to challenges and obstacles.

💬Communicate Effectively:
Clearly convey your thoughts, ideas, and expectations to others to ensure understanding and alignment.

🎁Take Advantage of Opportunities:
Be alert to openings that can help you progress or contribute positively, and seize them.

🤝Encourage and Adopt Ideas of Others:
Foster an environment that values and integrates diverse perspectives and ideas for collective growth.

💰 Influence Is the Currency of Leadership

We don’t need to have authority to have influence.

We live in a culture that places a high value on authority associated with specific positions, believing they come with automatic authority and responsibility.

However, we understand that having a position of authority doesn't automatically make one an effective leader.

You don’t need to wait for a title to lead.

Leaders cultivate influence with a title or without one.

We must avoid the trap of thinking we are helpless victims with nothing we can do. Instead we can focus on our own area of responsibility and influence and move it from good to great.

💡Each of us can begin to lead right where we are today through cultivating the influence.

We all posses that chance. But if you sit back and watch things pass without taking initiative, your voice will begin getting softer, waiting for your turn.

And if you don’t know how to lead without authority, you will have a hard time to lead with one too.

The more time we spend inactive, feeling like we're at the mercy of circumstances and other people's choices, the greater the chance we'll stifle and silence the leadership abilities within us.

Taking charge of our actions and choices, despite the situation, is crucial to nurturing and amplifying the leader within.

Proactivity, resilience, and a determined mindset are key to unlocking our true leadership potential and making a meaningful impact on the world around us.

💡Little Lessons Learned💡

🫴There's a common misconception that being in a position of authority is necessary to lead effectively.

🫴Leadership isn't just about holding a position of power; it's about taking responsibility and guiding others towards a shared vision or goal.

🫴It's important to break free from a victim mentality and the habit of blaming others or the organization for problems.

🫴Don't wait for a formal title to start leading. Take initiative and lead within your current capacity by identifying opportunities for improvement and proposing actionable solutions.

🫴Develop the confidence with proactivity and resilience to express your ideas and beliefs, even if you lack a formal leadership position.
