Identity Struggles for Young Leaders
The crucial and constant conversation you engage in is the one you have with yourself each day.
💡Your identity is how you see yourself, the beliefs you carry within, the story you tell yourself daily.
Drawing from my own experience I can say that there were moments of struggle for myself too.
When you are a young leader, and especially if you still do not have any formal authority, it is common to find yourself in one of these three identity traps:
Changing Identity to Please Others: Young leaders may alter their authentic selves to match what they believe will please their superiors, compromising their true identity.
Adopting Situational Identities: Some young leaders may adjust their identity based on the situation or circumstances, which can lead to inconsistency and a lack of authenticity in their leadership approach.
Selecting an Inauthentic Identity: Adopting an identity solely to conform to a specific situation, akin to a fictional character like Jason Bourne, can hinder genuine self-expression and authenticity in leadership, ultimately proving ineffective.

Movie The Bourne Identity, 2002.
Whether you hold a significant position or mentor others, an unstable identity can lead you to constantly adjust how you present yourself, seeking approval from others which cannot be healthy in long run.
Self-Awareness
How you perceive yourself shapes your life and the choices you make as a leader.
💡Your sense of who you are guides your actions in all circumstances.
Self-awareness is a fundamental skill for young leaders seeking to avoid common identity traps in the professional world.
By developing a keen understanding of oneself, one's values, and how external influences can shape their behavior, individuals can actively steer away from compromising their true identity.

This awareness empowers leaders to make authentic choices and remain true to their beliefs, even in challenging circumstances.
Here are some practical tips I have learn to practice through the years:
🪷Reflect on Your Values and Beliefs:
Take time to introspect and define what matters most to you, shaping the foundation upon which your decisions align with your true self.
🎯Seek Feedback and Input:
Actively request insights from trusted individuals to gain understanding of how your actions are perceived, bridging potential gaps between your intended and perceived identity.
✍️Journaling and Self-Reflection:
Engage in self-reflection through consistent journaling, unraveling behavior patterns and responses to challenges to foster a coherent and authentic sense of self.
🎠Stay Curious and Open-Minded:
Embrace a mindset of curiosity and receptiveness, welcoming diverse experiences and perspectives to enhance self-awareness and broaden your understanding of the world and yourself.
By integrating these practices into your daily routine, you can enhance your self-awareness and reduce the likelihood of falling into identity traps.
Embrace your authenticity and lead with confidence, true to the values and beliefs that define you as a capable and genuine leader.
